Hideaway Lakes, Mount Juliet, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny
A complex of three, attractive, mature clear-water lakes set in the magnificent, peaceful setting of the Mount Juliet Estate. Lake 1 (2 acres) is regularly stocked with prime rainbow trout as well as some browns and provides great sport on the fly. Lakes 2 (2 ¼ acres) and 3 (3 ½ acres) are primarily carp fisheries, with additional stocks of bream, rudd, roach and tench. Lake 2 is considered the more productive fishery, with multiple catches of carp to 10lb commonplace. Lake 3 has a lower stock of carp but the average size is larger (10-12lb), with the current fishery record standing at 16lb. Although the carp were first stocked in the late 1990s (Irish strain), the lakes were almost unfished until 2017 and there are certainly a few surprises lurking in the clear weedy waters! All lakes feature largely open banks and access is easy. A track allows vehicular access to most of the fishery in the dry conditions. The number of anglers allowed at any one time on the fishery is limited to preserve the overall fishing experience and it is necessary to book before arriving.
An exclusive 3km stretch of the stunning River Nore runs adjacent to the lakes and offers spectacular scenery as well as great fishing for wild brown trout. Several salmon lies are also present. A, experienced guiding service is available for the river and accommodation in Mount Juliet resort is also available all year round.
