The retired head of Dublin’s “Central Mental Hospital” was explaining the world to me as our skiff rollicked and our fly lines flew for the September salmon leaping and vanishing all around. Blasts of rain gave way to blasts of sun.

We had come on separate paths to one of Ireland’s ultimate refuges from care, the Delphi Lodge in County Mayo. The place is a necklace of three lakes in a hidden valley beneath sighing green mountains with the gilded little Bundorragha river running down to Ireland’s only fjord.   We were on Doolough – lake of dark water.
