LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3
Angling Report 30th July
Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association waters and Beat 3.
As of Monday 30th July water now at just under 2 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear. The Laune is in great condition for all methods of angling.
Monday last was not great despite a big angling effort. On Monday Jim Flinders fished and he had the dubious pleasure of losing a really big fish that took 150 yards of backing off his reel. On Tuesday things took off with a lot of fish being met on all methods especially the fly. Patrick Richard for the third week running met lots of fish and managed to land two on Tuesday 12.5 and 12 lb. and on Wednesday he landed a 13 pounder at Johnston’s.
This writer was very surprised and delighted to hook three fish on the fly at Broderick’s on Tuesday evening. 14 lb. sea-liced fish landed. A slightly coloured fish of 7 lb. returned. A fish of about 8 lb. lost. On Thursday Stewart Stephens broke on a big fish at the Rock Pool. The week has to go down as a good week for good fish and any angler who fished for a few hours especially fly fishing at least met fish.
The weekend was not as good as anticipated but there were a few anglers who managed to catch fish. Padraig Griffin had two fish at Johnston’s one on Saturday 7 lb. and a beauty of 12 lb. on Saturday. On Sunday Kathleen Collins had a fine fish of 12 lb. on the worm at Johnston’s and by Con Whelan 5 lb. on the fly at Rock Pool.
With the water as nice as it is at the moment and a refreshing drop of rain forecast for mid-week and with grilse showing and being caught prospects are good for the coming week and weekend. The water at this height favours the fly.
Permits for Laune Anglers during August and September cost only €35 per day.
Beat 3:
The past week on Beat 3 was probably the best so far. On Wednesday morning a visiting angler was displaying to tourists his catch of two fine fresh salmon at Beaufort Bridge. Stewart Stephens fly-fishing met fish on Beat 3 on Wednesday landed a lovely fish of 9 lbs lost another. Tom Ward had two lovely sea-liced fish on Beat 3 on Wednesday 8 and 9 lbs.
Water is now down a bit but the lower part of the beat should still fish well. The anticipated rain will do no harm to the Beats prospects.
Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish.
