Lindsey Clarke reports:

Monday 10th to Sunday 16th September 2012

The Owenea received numerous floods over the week with each day bringing good water levels except for Wednesday when the river was too high (0.58 metres) to fish all day. The gauge average for the week was high reading 0.32 metres! Despite some excellent water levels, the fishery was fairly quiet for the time of year and only 27 visiting rods fished for the week. There were a number of salmon recorded over the week but with the poor grilse run this season, most of these were fish that were coloured to varying degrees.

On Tuesday, Paul Brennan accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 8. On Thursday, Otmar Buts recorded a 10lb salmon caught on the fly from beat 5 and Kevin O’Neill logged an 8lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 5. On Friday, Mick McCole accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 6. Kevin O’Neill registered a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 5. Patrick Kelsall recorded 2 grilse weighing 3 & 3½lb caught on a fly from beat 8 with one of these being released and I caught and released an 8lb salmon on a fly from beat 5. On Sunday, James Compston logged a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 9 and I caught and released 2 grilse weighing 3½ & 5lb on caught on a fly from beat 5.

The coming week is forecast to be wet towards the start of the week and hopefully we will receive some good water levels and the run of grilse will improve.
