Paul Strange from Carrick Fergus showed more that a bit of skill and a fair helping of luck when he caught a magnificent 209lb common skate only 2 hours after landing one of 135lb! Paul was out with Hamish Currie of the Predator II from Red Bay in Antrim. A total of 3 skate were landed that day along with quite a few congers and spurdogs on a deep drop off 19km north of Red Bay. This superb skate wins our Catch of the Week.
Bait was a whole dogfish lowered into 475 feet of water and using typical 50lb stand up gear the fight lasted 80 minutes. Paul, who is a new recruit to one of Hamish’s specimen clubs says he is delighted to be part of the crew and is looking forward to landing his first shark.
