Sydney Kennedy reports that while fishing for pike and perch with his son Derick in Carrigadrohid last week his fish finder located a large shoal of fish that were in a trough with a narrow channel running through it. Seeing an opportunity to get amongst some good coarse fish Sydney decided to pre-bait the location. Over the next few days Sidney and Derick put in over 65kg of mixed ground bait by boat . The day they started to fish he was glad to see that the shoal marks were still showing on the fishfinder.
The gear set up carp style with big baits and big hooks to avoid roach and any other fish with small mouths. Sidney and Derick knew there was no guarantee of success, but it was worth trying this due to the large number of roach and hybrids in the lake.
As the evening pushed on they got their first run but lost it at the net it was a carp around 14lb. Their next fish was a bream of 7lb 11oz. After that another bream of 7lb 9oz was landed and last but not least they landed a 8lb 10oz bream.
In between the bream they had a lot of drop runs there could have bin rudd-bream hybrids. While the bag was not big it looked like the tactic of using big hooks and big baits to sort out the big fish paid off.
