Eoin Mahony got in touch with us to tell us about some incredible tench and bream fishing he has had recently. Eoin and his pal John headed to Cavan targeting tench on a large water – we’ll let him finish the story:
I decided to fish two cage feeders as bream were also a target. So once I found my range and location, I clipped up, and fired out 5 spoms of partical over each swim and followed with my trusty worm kebab hair rig, size 12 barbless.
Didnt take long for the fish to find the bait. And did they!! After netting a 7lb 3oz tench moments before, my right had rod screamed off and I wasnt ready for what was in the other end. A big female, ready to burst with spawn. All 8lb 4oz of her.
Thinking things couldnt get much better, on my following session the very next weekend, my very first cast (using the same tactics and bait) ended up with a massive dustbin lid of a bream – a new PB at 12lb 6oz. Mindblowing!

Eoin scales have been calibrated, so we’ll see if his tench is the new Irish record, the current record tench sits at 8.15lbs…
Congratulations to him either way, on some truly memorable fishing.
