Enda Hicky writes that they had a very successfulĀ Fisheries Awareness Day on the 11th of May in Daingean Co Offaly…

This was the very first time and event was held here and with the help of the Irish Angling Development Alliance and the local Grand Canal Water Sports and Leisure group it was a massiveĀ success.

We had up to 40 children along with parents attend and for the vast majority it was their very first attempt at fishing. A lot caught their first fish and we are now looking at starting up a new club to cater for these new anglers. One of the noticeable things was that the ratio of girls to boysĀ leanedĀ in the girl direction which is wonderful for the sport, in fact it was Saoirse Quinn who had the very first fish.

Everyone gets a go!
Everyone gets a go!

We would like toĀ thank allĀ thoseĀ who made it possible,Ā Geoff Quinn, Peter Walsh andĀ Fergal Scully from the IADA and the committeeĀ of the GCWS&L plus the Castle Barna golf club and to ToomansĀ Bait & Tackle for supplying free bait.

We will looking at running another similar event later in the year.
