Mike Murray of Murray’s Angling Services reports that the past couple of weeks have provided fantastic sport in Portumna both on The Shannon and Lough Derg…

Huge shoals of Roach, Hybrids, Bream and Perch have been congregating between the Salmon Run and the entrance to Lough Derg. Pike  are shadowing the shoals and silverfish anglers are constantly having pike hit fish as they are being reeled in.

Two English anglers John Wicks and his friend Russ who are regular visitors to Portumna had a great weeks fishing netting 50lbs – 80lbs each per day alternating between feeder, pole and feeder pole. Caster seemed to be the hookbait of choice. John’s best day was 117lbs which included Roach over 2lbs. The two lads only fished from noon until evening as they admitted they were late risers so their bags could have been considerably more!!

Perch in other areas readily taking worm, maggot or spinners. The mild weather has played a part so if this continues we can expect a bumper October.
