THIS YEAR marks the 100th anniversary of what is believed to be one of the largest salmons ever caught in the River Barrow.
The fish, which was caught by the Murphy’s of MacMurrough on the outskirts of New Ross in February 1913 under Woodville House near the Ferrybridge, weighed in at a hefty 54.5 pounds.
Nicholas Murphy and his sons Patrick, Nicholas Jr and Michael Murphy were out fishing one night when they made the record catch.
The fishermen subsequently sold the salmon onto Sheehan’s, who were fishmongers located on Bridge Street in New Ross at the time….
