Joe Kenna from the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association writes that congratulations go to Darius Simkai and Krzysztof Szwab, both of whom relocated to Ireland a number of years ago and were members of the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Associations 2013 International Rivers Team that represented Ireland at the 2013 International Rivers Match. This match took place at the Lower Taff and was hosted by the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association on the 28th June. This is a huge achievement for these two anglers and the Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association is encouraging others to become involved with their local trout angling clubs.

The warm sunny weather and extremely low water levels made angling on the Lower Taff very tough with trout proving difficult to locate and spooking easily. Whilst every team benefited from practice during the week leading up to the match, local knowledge was to prove invaluable with the host country taking 1st place and winning the Geoff Clarkson Trophy with a remarkable 36 placings. Second place went to Team England with 55 placings, 3rd place went to Team Ireland with 60 placings and 4th place went to Team Scotland with 61 placings. Renowned Welsh angler, Terry Bromwell, who won the Moc Morgan Trophy for the best individual angler also won the Mike Childs Trophy for the largest fish with an amazing river trout of 63.4 cm which would have weighed approximately 5lb. Brian Larkin had the top Irish rod with seven fish and 10 placings.

ITFFA would like to thank the Welsh Salmon and Trout Angling Association who were fabulous hosts and we congratulate the Welsh Team on a fantastic win. We would also like to extend our gratitude to our sponsors, Thinkfish, John Buckley of Emerger tackle and PJ O’Brien.

The Lower Taff is a fantastic trout angling venue which produces quality trout of a relatively large size. If you intend on visiting Wales in the near future you should try to plan a visit to the Lower Taff!
