I have just received a report that Lough Allen College had an outing on the Shannon near Drumshambo over the weekend. There was an early start for those participating in the event and fishing took place from 07.30 to 12-30. Fishing was very tough on the day and there were only a few fish caught in low water condition’s. However, despite the tough conditions, three very good fish took the top 3 places. The day was sponsored by IFPAC and their Youth Officer, Brendan O’Reilly made the trip over to present the trophies to the winners. The results of the competition areas follows

  • 1st Ryan McGovern with a fish of 19 lb.
  • 2nd Daniel Lambert with a fish of 10-05 oz.
  • 3rd Harry Davis with a fish of 9-02oz.

Pike Handling and conservation

Anglers are reminded of the importance of carefully handling pike, especially when you are dealing with females around the spawning season. An unhooking mat is of great use to ensure that the fishes vulnerable slime layer does not get damaged and lead to infection. IFI have have published guidelines on pike handling here:
