Unlike their fellow Northern Ireland angling club, the Lurgan CAC, the VDE Baggers struck it lucky last weekend as they managed to dodge the chocolate brown flood in the Ulster Blackwater over the weekend. An extra day made all the difference as the river dropped a foot overnight and cleared up enough to spur the fish into action, well timed for the culmination of their summer league.
Fish were on the feed throughout the stretch, and big skimmers and bream featured amongst the catches, giving everyone a welcome boost after a few tricky matches on the river in recent months.
In the end, Davey Wellwood took the honours on the day, with a fine 7.82kg net. The league was tight at the top, with three anglers tied on four points, but Jack Tisdall won through with a better combined weight.
