David McEvoy reports on the fishing at Delphi…
As I stated in my last update I was expecting greatness from last weeks anglers and in fairness in what were very extreme conditions they delivered 25 fish which made it an excellent week’s sport.
We certainly got our first taste of Atlantic depressions for some time with Doolough unfishable for four out of the last seven days. I could have taken better pictures of Doolough in more extreme conditions during this past week.
Keeping up the family tradition the Westropp boys had a fish each on Sunday. Kit had one of 3lbs 5ozs off the Quarry pool on a Beaded nymph and Edward had one of 2lbs 2ozs on a Silver Stoat from the Meadow. There fishing partner Edward Furness Smith also managed to land one on Fin the next day of 2lbs 3ozs on a beaded nymph.
It was however the Westropp’s aunt and her husband Maggie and Paul Sims along with Ian Carroll who had the lions share of the fish. Between them they landed a total of fourteen. Maggie and Paul had four off the river and four off Fin on various different combinations of flies. Ian Carroll landed six all off the river and all on a Sunrae Shadow.
Bob Obrick from the US also landed his first ever a 3lbs fish on a Delphi Collie from the Bridge pool. Keith Hemming has landed two so far on his first visit, both from Fin Stream, one of 3lbs 10ozs on a Sunrae Shadow and one of 5lbs 14ozs on a Collie variant. Mike Heckler had his second of the week, a 6lbs 14ozs fish off Fin stream on a Red Francis. George Westropp also managed to land a fish shortly after his arrival from Fin stream of approx. 3lbs on a Green Peter.
Finally Ian Edgar from the Bahamas had a fish of 5lbs 7ozs off Fin on a Delphi Collie yesterday.
This week starts relatively quietly and there are some experienced anglers here, but with the weather forecast to be dry with light winds they will have there work cut out for them to live up to last weeks total.
