17/09/2013: Another Wild day on Lough Currane today with a strong west wind blowing down the Lake, but this didn’t deter Mr. Michael Smith of the UK and his Son Sean and their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com  of manipulating their flies, by the end of the day, they recorded 3 Juniors for their hard work. Now we take a stroll across the valley to the River Inny. Matador of the Bull Ring Tralee and Waterville, Mr. Mike Teahan, caught a 6 lbs. Salmon on the Black Birds Fancy and staying with the Inny, this evening Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a 11 lbs. Salmon on the fly. 18/09/2013: There was some good fishing on the Waterville Fishery today. We start on the Big Lake/Lough Currane, straight to catch of the day and that goes to Mr. John Allen of the UK and these are John’s words and I quote, The wind & weather backed off enough for me to get a last day on the lake before leaving for home. So went out with Bob and we each had a nice fish. As the Photos show Bob had a nice Salmon, a hen of about 10/11lb and 1 Junior and  I had a super pretty fresh hen 3.5lb Sea Trout and 2 other Juniors. All fish returned fit and healthy to spawn another year. We rose several more but they were coming short however, what a lovely way to end your season. All in all one of the best weeks fishing I have had on Currane for many a year. Also in good form in the Salmon department Swiss Anglers caught a fine 5 ½ lbs. Salmon on the troll, while fishing with their Gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com In the total Sea Trout fly department Mr. Sean Smith of the UK and his Father Michael, fishing with their Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught, 3 Sea Trout, their weights are as follows 1 ½ lbs 2 ½ lbs. and finished their day off with a 7 ¼ lbs and all returned. Now for a stroll across the valley to the River Inny, where there was some reasonable action and going by the detective agency, some catches weren’t reported, but the Inny catch of the day was Mr. Rod Robinson of Waterville takes that accolade with 2 fine Salmon weighing in at 8 lbs and 10 lbs and released one of the Salmon, and just for the record both fish were caught on the fly. Wind N light to fresh with reasonable cloud cover.

19/09/2013: Lough Currane was a bit quieter today, mind you Mr. John Enright of Kilkenny and his Gillie Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of Waterville Boats and at [email protected] would beg to differ and for good reason they caught 2 fine Grilse on the troll between them. Now to the total Sea Trout fly department, local Gillie Mr. Eric Jouen at [email protected] caught 1 Junior on the drift. Now to the hired out boat department of www.lakelandshouse.com Mr. Dave and John Cronin caught 3 Juniors on the drift. Now we head across the Valley to the River Inny Local Gillie Mr. Dominic McGillicuddy of www.fishingwithdom.com caught a 12 lbs Salmon on the fly. Staying with the Inny, French Anglers fishing out of www.kbfishingireland.com caught a fine 5 lbs. Salmon early this morning then headed for the Atlantic coastline for a bit of Bass fishing and caught 11 Sea Bass, not bad considering it was their first time fishing for the Salmon of the Sea, and in the words of their Gillie Mr. Kevin Brain, what do you expect when you are with a professional as good as my self, in all departments as you would say, be it Salmon, Sea trout, or Bass fishing and you can add Kayak fishing to that, need I say more. Wind W fresh to strong then veered NW light to fresh and overcast.

News and Events August 2013

Waterville Fisheries Development Limited invited to address Inland Fisheries Ireland Board Meeting!!

Inland Fisheries Ireland periodically arrange to have their monthly
board meetings in the Regions. September’s meeting was scheduled
to be held in Waterville  and representatives from our Group were
privileged to be invited to attend and give a presentation to Board
Members on the work carried out by the Waterville Fisheries
Development Group. This was seen by this Committee to be a good
opportunity to strengthen our relationship with IFI and also to outline
some of the issues currently facing the Waterville Fishery.

In the event the meeting took place in the Derrynane Hotel as the
Butler Arms Hotel, originally scheduled as the venue, were unable to
provide adequate facilities for the Inland Fisheries Ireland Board

Our Secretary, Kevin O’Sullivan, accompanied by Committee
Members Tadhg O’Sullivan and Rod Robinson, gave a very full
presentation to the Board Members, which was very enthusiastically
received! A lively question and answer session followed and our
Committee felt that the whole event was very successful and very
beneficial to the interests of Waterville as a whole.

Kevin was able to outline both what we do and the actions we are
currently taking to protect this famous fishery, not as a fishing club
but as a community based Conservation Group. For their part the
Board were very congratulatory and impressed by what they heard
and indicated that they perceived The Waterville Group as a ‘Model’
format for other similar Groups, countrywide, to follow.
They also pledged their help and support to us wherever their remit
permitted.

The Board were also anxious to see the new Fish Counter which they
have recently installed in the Butler’s Pool. The meeting then
de-camped to Waterville House to view the fish counter and the
electronics now installed in the House.

Electronic fish counters have been placed on all three ‘weirs’ and are
reinforced with digital video cameras, which in turn are relayed back
to the monitors in Waterville House. This will enable meaningful data
on fish movements into and out of the system to be collated over
the coming years.

Ciaran Byrne, the CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland, explained to all the
importance of keeping the reflective bases and wiring in the counters
clear of debris and algae to ensure the installation functions properly.

It seems that Waterville now has a state of the art fish monitoring
facility!
We are very happy to offer our assistance to our local IFI Fishery
Team, Sean Clifford and Sean Moran to ensure its proper maintenance

That is your ration for this week, from your Gillie/Guide and the Waterville fishery.

No Spin No Fly’s just facts.
