Paul Whelan Fort William Estate reports that the dull weather and threat of rain brought on a bite yesterday…
Water levels are very low now (30 July) but fish are starting to go on the take at last. Over the last few days fishing was starting to pick up as fish were being landed and lost.
Mathew Fagan who is 11 years old had a nice grilse of 4lbs, John Cooper had a fish of 4lbs, Simon Cassidy had a grilse of 3lbs and 6 sea trout the heaviest 2lbs. Mossy Brown had a fish of 3lbs.
Fergus Crawford had 2 fish for his day out, one of 8.5lbs and 4lbs. A good number of fish are now showing in the pools so looking forward to the coming week as heavy showers are forecasted.
Open Day report
The following report is courtesy of Andrew Ryan of Clonanav…
Fort William held its first open day under the new owners last weekend and it was a huge success. With over 40 anglers in attendance in glorious sunshine a great day was had by all. The estate was purchased earlier this year by David and Phillipa Evans-Bevan. The open day on Sunday was held to allow anglers to see the wonderful fishing available at Fort William.
The day was organised by fishery manager Paul Whelan. Casting demos were held in the morning by myself Andrew Ryan and also Guideline PowerTeam member Kieran Conlon. There was huge interest in the Guideline Exceed and LXi rods as well as the new range of shooting heads and running lines.
A barbecue lunch was served on the Ellis beat with a great spread put on by Paul Whelans wife; Bridget.
The fishery was open to guests for the afternoon to fish on any of the beats they wished. I would like to wish David and Phillipa the very best with their new venture here in Ireland!

Go fishing…
Flowing through Cork and Waterford, in the south east of Ireland, the river Blackwater is most famous for it’s salmon fishing. Fort William Fishery has 5 beats on the river, which include stretches particularly suited to flyfishing. Our beats offer a wide variety of water, suitable for both beginners and the more experienced fishermen. In summer we have also good numbers of sea trout. On the estate there is two self-catering cottages and tackle/freezer room. Whether you like fishing for salmon or fly fishing for sea trout, Fort William will meet all your game angling requirements and much more.
