Owenea Fishery report from Lindsey Clarke
There were some decent water levels on the Owenea this week although unfortunately the water was rising on most days when we received floods. Monday gave good conditions with the gauge reading 0.29 metres in the morning with the river falling. The river then dropped until Thursday when heavy drizzle meant the river slowly rose to 0.22 metres. On Friday the river continued to rise up to 0.36 metres. Saturday gave a reading of 0.23 metres with river falling and Sunday the river was rising up to 0.19 metres. The gauge average for the week was good reading 0.23 metres. The fishery was fairly quiet with only 16 visiting rods in attendance. To date I have 7 salmon in the catch register and all these were fresh with some being of an impressive size.
On Monday, Richard Morrison recorded a fine 15lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8 and his father Derek logged a 4lb grilse also caught on a fly from beat8. On Tuesday, Richard recorded a further salmon weighing 10lb caught on a fly from beat 8 again & Frankie Byrne reported a 13lb 3oz salmon caught on fly from beat 6. On Friday, Sean Campbell recorded an 8½lb salmon caught on a worm from beat 8 and I caught a 9lb salmon on a fly from beat 5. On Saturday, Shaun O’Doherty recorded a 14lb 1oz salmon caught on a fly from beat 7. The forecast is for unsettled weather for the coming week and hopefully this will equate to good water levels. Prospects are looking good
