Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers Association reports on the week’s fishing…
As of Monday 23rd September Laune now back up to 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s
The drop of water we got early in the week made a slight difference to the fishing. The water level came up to about 8 inches. There is a considerable angling effort going on right now and when you measure effort against catches the fishing could not be classed as good. That said a few fish are being caught each day up to Thursday by all methods.
Patrick Richard had a couple of nice fish early in the week one of 7lbs. Stewart Stephens (Chairman) had two fish on Wednesday evening at Paul Connors strand while his angling buddies did not even get a touch. Eileen Richards met two fish last week and lost both. Eileen and her husband Clive are on holiday from the UK. This week Eileen hooked and landed a fresh beauty of 9 lbs, I’m sure her husband Clive is delighted for Eileen, he is I regret to say fishless so far. Heidi Weickum having met two fish last week managed to land a sea liced fish of 4 lbs on Wednesday.
Fish of the week goes to Michael Burke Tralee who landed a lovely fish heading towards 13lbs on the fly at Johnston’s on Thursday evening.
As the water fell back towards the weekend fewer fish were seen running or showing in the pools. Members and visiting are hoping that there are fish there but as usual in this sultry weather ‘they won’t touch anything’
Permits for Laune Anglers during August and September will only cost €35 per day.
Beat 3:
Water on Beat 3 is again very low having been up slightly earlier in the week consequently there was one fish of 11lbs caught there on Wednesday. There is still a good rise of brown trout there later in the evenings.
Prospects:
We need a rise of two feet for any good fishing prospects, I see there is some rain on Thursday but it may be a case of too little too late.
Anglers please note: A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish when the water is right.
