With the season now closed on the Rye Water attention has now started to turn towards both rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water and Pike on the RyeLake. The rainbows have been in fine form as of late and are responding well to a variety of lures at the moment – purple being particularly in vogue. A floating line and typical river rod are ideal on this stretch of water.
The Sheet of Water is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the RyeLake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique. Please note that fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.
A few anglers managed to fish the RyeLake just before the trout season ended (Sept 30th). Notable amongst them was 13 year old French angler Benoit Kloeckner who having already returned several rainbows on the Sheet of Water managed to land his first pike – a fine fish of roughly 8 – 10lb on a perch lookalike streamer.
Although Benoit’s father Bruno also had a fine trout of about 3lb on a Woolly Bugger I think bragging rights were firmly in the junior corner for this particular father & son team.
As more anglers fish for pike on the RyeLake I will be in a better position to advise on tactics etc. Certainly at the moment pike are responding well to perch and roach lookalike streamer patterns fished near the margins on intermediate or floating lines.

Go fishing…
Tickets / permits should be purchased at the hotel main reception prior to fishing. Parking is at the boathouse on the lake. Please respect the wishes of golfers and stay off greens and Tee areas as they can become badly cut up when fishing activity takes place on them.
A day permit is €50. Anglers should note that this means they can fish for brown trout on the Rye Lake, brown trout on the Rye Water and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
