Rob Love, Carton House Fishery Manager, reports that the Ryewater and stocked lakes at Catron House are fishing well recently…

The last few days of August are providing some good sport at Carton House.  The Rye Water and Sheet of Water have fished well with a group of Argentine anglers doing particularly well last Monday afternoon. While the majority of the Rye Water has been running very low over the last week there are still one or two stretches which are fishing very well indeed. Nymphs continue to give good sport throughout the day  – especially PTN’s and Hares Ears.

The Rye Lake has seen no activity over the last week.  However fish have been noticed feeding at the surface throughout the day on the enormous numbers of Daddy Long Legs or Crane Flies.  With September just around the corner fingers are firmly crossed that the trout continue to feed so voraciously on the poor unfortunate Daddy, and perhaps with a bit of luck on the Large Dark Olives which hatch in good numbers throughout the month.

The Sheet of Water has continued where it left off last week.  Fishing has been very good with the Rainbows in fighting fit condition.  The usual ‘Rainbow flies’ are working well with green or orange damsels top of the list.

The Sheet of Water is a more forgiving stretch of water to fish than the Rye which can be quite demanding.  It is perhaps more suited to the beginner / improving angler and it is far more sheltered than the Rye Lake which helps with anyone brushing up on casting technique.  Fishing on the Sheet of Water is only permitted when with a guide.

Go fishing…

A day permit is €50.  Anglers should note that this means they can fish for brown trout on the Rye Lake, brown trout on the Rye Water and rainbow trout on the Sheet of Water (all fly only) in this timeframe – so if one is not working the other might.
