An introduction to hemp on the Grand Canal for Irish Youth Angling Club

Angling juniors enjoyed a day of fishing, coaching and some cooking instruction on the Grand Canal at Rogerstown, near Edenderry at the weekend.

The theme of the day was fishing with hemp, the juniors were taught how to make a rig, prepare the bait and fish with it!  It was a great success with everyone catching on the seed.

Some competitive angling followed with the juniors allocated pegs with names such as ‘Roach Retreat’, ‘Bream B&B’ and ‘Eel Town’ helping with awareness of the species in the canal. Top angler on the day was Niall O’Beirne with 3 lb 9 oz, followed by our young lady angler Ciara McEvilly with 1 lb 2 oz. In third place came Killian McEvilly with 1 lb, fourth was Joseph with 15 oz and finally keeping it in the family was Liam McEvilly with 8 oz.

A few prizes were given out to keep the competition element – yes, bags of raw hemp!

Well done to everyone and thanks to our helpers.
