Fish on a Friday has long been a family tradition in this country and mackerel has often been the main course. But anyone shopping for the oily variety this year will struggle to get a nice fresh batch as migrating shoals have completely by-passed Ireland. Most fish eaters blame the scarcity on reduced quotas or depleting stocks. But ironically, we can reveal there are more mackerel than ever in our seas and that our fishing quotas have actually increased.
