Long-range telescopes which can clearly photograph boats over 3.5 kilometres away are now being used to catch poachers, the inland fisheries body has revealed. The “photoscope” technology is being used by inspectors from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) in an increasing number of covert surveillance operations around the country. Previously, surveillance operations were rarely sited more than 2 kilometres from any suspicious activity. The move comes amid a 14pc increase in illegal fishing cases last year.
