I HEARD a little girl asking her mum then other day: “When is it going to stop raining?” Good question.  In rural Northern Ireland, where I grew up, rain is a given. It rains quite a lot. Over in the west of the country, they get an immense amount of rainfall. The lush greenness that these downpours produce is probably why Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. I went on a fishing holiday to County Mayo in 1985 and it rained constantly for about ten days. The spate rivers – which will rise half an inch if you spit in them – were in constant flood…
