Declan Cooke reports from the beautiful Moy:
The first salmon from the river Moy for the 2014 season was caught yesterday (13/3/’14) in Ballina the “Salmon Capital of Ireland”. It weighed in at 7lbs 12oz and was caught by local angler Val Mitchell using the time honoured “plug of worms” on the Ballina Salmon Anglers Association water, just upstream from the weir.

The first Moy salmon is usually caught during the month of February but water levels on the Moy had been extremely high and angling has only been possible over the last few days as flood waters receded. There is now a palpable buzz of excitement amongst the angling community around the towns of Ballina and Foxford as conditions on the river continue to improve and the season has finally kicked-off. Angling prospects on the Moy remain excellent for the coming weeks.
