On Saturday Donie Geary of the John Boy was out with a mix of anglers from Loughcarrig House; Tom Maguire and his group of 3 from Cavan, 2 English anglers and Frank Clarke who was a well known charter skipper in Westport and now resident in Midleton…
As with previous groups we went straight for the old reliable whiting grounds and with the wind a bit fresh for drifting I decided to drop anchor on the edge of the rock and fish on to the sand, and what a couple of hours fishing we had!! We were landing whiting up to 2lbs. 3 at the time, along with some good ling to 10lb., codling, dogs and gurnard. Even though we were only retaining the best of the fish we had a full box of edibles by lunchtime. We then decided to take a break and fish on the Smiths for a few conger and pollack which hadn’t been very plentiful of late, but to our surprise we were again in the fish landing 25 conger to 30lbs. and a half dozen fine ling before returning to East Ferry. On Sunday again with the Maguire group and a couple of Dublin anglers we were happy to do a repeat performance, but even though the whiting were plentiful the conger had decided to take a day off. After several moves we managed to land 12 conger. But there will be plenty of fresh fish in Cavan this week.
Monday I had a trip from Crosshaven with 5 Dutch anglers and 2 Irish who are staying at Trabolgan. We went South to the Smiths and spent a good hour drifting different marks. We finished with again a box of very good whiting and 20+ conger, Ling (best 12lb.), pollack, cod, dogs and a beautiful sand crab which will I will enjoy eating myself.
