Tom Collins, skipper of Loch an Iasc, reports on the first shark catch of 2015…
The first blue shark of the season was caught today (Thursday 04 June) on our boat Loch An Iasc from Union Hall. This the second time in two years that the first shark of the season was caught on Loch an Iasc – last year one of Tom’s anglers had blue shark on 31 May.
It was caught by Evan McGovern and measured in at 180 fork by 71 girth – just under specimen size. After a couple of quick photos the shark was tagged and released and wins our Catch of the Week.
Conditions are good at the moment and Tom had been waiting for a weather window for the last few days. Bait are a problem today onboard Loch an Iasc as the mackerel are scarce, but enough coalies were caught and they proved to be good enough when it came down to it.
This was very much a experimental trip as water temperatures are not quite as high as Tom would have liked and certainly less than what they were this time last year. That said it will be interesting to see what the weekend brings as Sunday is forecast to be a good day…
Tight lines,
Tom Collins
