Daryl Ewing from Sligo Boat Charters wants to say massive thank you to all the anglers who came out to support the charity that saves lives at sea, the RNLI, at Sunday’s competition on Sligo Bay…
We had 19 anglers take part and raised over €1000 for the charity. Results were, 2nd Juniors – Luke McCallion, 1st Juniors – Clodagh Doyle.
In the seniors 3rd place went to Boris Siegel, 2nd to Thomas McCallion, and 1st and overall winner was Brian Faulkner. The best skipper prize went to Tommy McCallion. The best specimen fish was taken by Brian Faulkner. Andy Skully presented the winner for the seniors as sadly, the last winner, Gearoid Skully (his brother) has since passed away.
During the competition one unfortunate who was busy helping another angler sort out a tangle lost his rod as his rig found a snag while he was being a good Samaritan.
Kieran McGowan was the unfortunate angler who tells us “While trying to free another anglers tangled rig, I succeeded, and I am still not sure how, in dropping my own much loved rod over the side of the boat. I watched in complete disbelief as it slipped under the waves of Sligo Bay, telling myself that it could not really have just happened, but said a silent final goodbye to both rod and reel none the less.”
“The rest of the day went by in a daze replaying the scene over and over in my head trying to figure out what I had done wrong.”
“The following afternoon, Monday, I got a call from Daryl to say that he had gone back out with a diver and retrieved my rod with reel and rig still attached, and when would it suit me to come and collect it. ”
When asked about this incredible act of kindness Darly Ewing told us “I felt particularly bad for him. Sometimes you just have a bad day and it’s nice to be able to help make things right again.
We were lucky to get it back the day after as the area is tidal, but luckily it was sitting down at 22m in a gully on the mark. Needless to say Kieran was overjoyed when he got it back and I was delighted to help.”
Daryl went on to thank all the sponsors of the RNLI competition: Yeats Country Hotel, Sligo Park Hotel, Harrys Bar Rosses Point, Austies bar, Rose Garden Restaurant, Davis’s Restaurant, Shannon Tackle, Barton Smith, Decorplan, Conways Shop Rosses Point, the Beach Bar, The ladies of the RNLI shop, Strandhill Lodge and Suites, Island View Riding Stables, Eagles Flying and Osta cafe, Sligo as none of this would have been possible without their help and generous contributions.
