Andrew Ryan of Clonanav reports on opening day on the the Nire, a tributary of the River Suir…
Today was the start of our long awaited 2015 season. We had been waiting for weeks to get on the water and today the day finally came. A beautiful crisp March morning, it began cold, but around 11.30 started to really brighten up with some very warm sunshine. The day began with a group of regular customers meeting at our shop for breakfast and coffee. An eager bunch all ready to get the first fish of the season.

We headed to the Nire for the first few casts of the day and it was promising with some good hatches of large dark olives and the river was in perfect order and had dropped to a nice level after recent rain.

The first fish was landed by local angler Des O’Rourke on a jig head nymph, and what a fish! Measuring over 52cm, we reckoned he was close to 5lb! and wins our Catch of the Week
David and John also had several fish, with John catching 7 fish during the day. Quite a few more fish were hooked an lost and it was an amazing day overall.
Roll on the 2015 season!
