After a fairly miserable May things are picking up at  Ballyhoe Lakes. Garrett O’Reilly has all the news…

06 June: As you can imagine the recent cold weather has had a dramatic effect on the fishing for most anglers and not more so for the ever moody tench , this last few weeks has seen so much cold water going into the lakes on a daily basis its no wonder the fishing has been patchy to say the least , with not much to report on catch wise  and very few anglers about this last month  or so , this last week has seen a definite improvement on the lakes with more and more anglers now visting them , with Ballyhoe 1 again throwing up some of the better fish with tench to 7lb and the odd big bream to over 9lb.

Alan Croke had 12 tench to 6lb in one overnight session

This last week or so has seen more and more  angers camping up on Ballyhoe and finally she’s showing signs of being more consistent with most anglers now managing to catch fish. Hair-rigged fake corn on a bolt rig accounted for a 12 fish tench  haul for club member Alan Croke for his overnight stay recently with fish to over 6lb.

Also Dublin anglers Barry, Jay ,Owen and Greg spent a few days with their kids in very poor weather conditions at times it must be said but stil managed to connect with some specimen fish with various tench going over 6lb plus and bream to 8lb 3oz.

Barry Diamond also had some good tench on an overnight session

And Barry Diamond also managed a few decent tench for his overnighter  session recently in what was also challenging weather conditions , corn n casters was the best bait for himself on the day.

Other local waters

Derrys Lough  has seen a slow improvement with more tench and bream showing than previous weeks but the water temperature was only 11 degrees when I visted the lake a few days ago, well down  on what it should be for this time of the year.

I aso  visited Ballyhoe 2 twice last month and it was hard going to say the least. When I was there 2 weeks ago there was so much rain during the night we awoke early the next morning to see a wall of muddy water coming across the lake towards our shore. It quickly engulfed everything. The lake had risen 4ft over night. Another angler had too run for the cover of his car during the night after his bivvy was swamped by a river of  water running from the hills behind him. He awoke to find his seatbox completely submerged in water having left it at the lakes edge the night before. We couldn’t buy a bite either next day.  Rahans rose 8-10ft the same night. What a night that was, I never saw anything like it.
