Billy Downes of the Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association reports that as of on Monday 28th of September the water level was back to 1.53m or about 2 feet 6 inches on the gauge at Johnston’s. There was ideal water over the weekend and for last three days of season. It was very high still during the past week but despite this Francis O’Sullivan, member from Tralee managed to land a beautiful fresh fish of 18 lbs and lost another, that was last Monday.
There were two French visitors who were advised by our French member Patrick Richard who managed to meet a few fish for the week on the fly in various fisheries including Beat 2. They were Olivier Lahittete and Lilian Lahittete two expert fly anglers and casters they come from the south west of France near Navarrenx (Bearn) (well Known in the past for the world salmon fishing anglers championship) Olivier and Lilian regularly fish the best salmon river in France (Le Gave D’OLORON) These men have fished the Laune going back for 20 years , they are happy with their trip because they got fish but they are a little bit disappointed because they didn’t see a fish holding in the pools as it was in previous visits. Apart from this news of fish met or seen is extremely scarce.
On 28 September Richard Barry landed a lovely cock fish of 8 lbs on the fly this afternoon at Breen’s – first in two years. “better late than never”. On the 29th there were swallows and a salmon on the river. Sean O’Sullivan fishing at Coffey’s had a fine salmon which he returned.
It was agreat way to end the season yesterday, for Garry Fernane who landed a beautiful cock of 9.5 lbs at Johnston’s. Fishing in beautiful weather and a beautiful setting at least, the cows were looking forward to some peace and quiet. Tom Curtayne also had a Closing day fish, at Crowley’s a fine fish of 9 lbs.
There were no fish reproted from for the Killarney lakes or River flesk
