Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 15th to Sunday 21st June 2015.
This week was dry but the Drowes held its water levels well. The gauge read 0.53m on Monday and the river steadily fell to read 0.46m by the end of play on Sunday. The river fished well once again as the very good run of grilse continued and there were some 80 salmon caught for the week. Given here are some of the catches taken from the Catch Register at the Lareen Fishery Office.
On Monday, Stephen Smith recorded a 4lb grilse caught and released on a fly from the Perch Pool. Tuesday was the top day with some 25 salmon caught. Alex Innes recorded a 5lb grilse caught on worm from the Eel Weir. Sean McCloskey reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Black Hole. Bruno Pecoul logged a 4½lb grilse caught on a Rapala from the Black Hole. Mr Renglet registered a 3lb grilse caught on a fly from the Sea Pools. Dave Cox recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Black Hole. Didier Gondois reported a 3lb grilse caught on shrimp from the Eel Weir. Martin McCurran logged a 5lb grilse caught on a Rapala from the Otter Hole.Brian McClintock registered a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Ash Hole. Brenda Lyons recorded a 4½lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Ash Hole. Phillip Friel reported 5 grilse to 5½lb caught on shrimp from the Sea Pools with 3 of these being released and John Walters accounted for 6 grilse to 7lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools with 5 of these being released.
On Wednesday, Sean McCloskey recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from the Black Hole. William Rainey reported an 8lb salmon caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. S. McCabe logged 2 salmon weighing 7 & 8lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools. Michael Power logged a 7lb salmon caught on a fly from the Blackwater. Beat Schlopabach registered an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from the Wee Drain. Donal Conal accounted for a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from Briney’s. On Thursday, John Walters recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from the Eel Weir. Phillip Filer reported a 3lb grilse caught on prawn from the Eel Weir. Sean McCloskey logged a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from the Eel Weir and Rob McCutcheon accounted for a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from the Eel Weir.
On Friday, Michael Power recorded a 5lb grilse caught on a fly from the Eel Weir. George Hislop reported a 5lb grilse caught on a spinner from the Eel Weir and John Walters accounted for 3 grilse around 3½lb caught on prawn from the Sea Pools and Briney’s with 1 of these being released. The weekend, funnily enough, was much quieter and to date we only have heard of one grilse caught. This was Frank Doherty’s 4lb grilse that was caught on a fly from Corry Clay.
