Vincent Appleby reports on the last week’s activities at Lough Currane…
4/3/15 There were just two boats manipulating on this day and the only bit of action was in Bob Priestley’s boat, who sadly lost a Salmon on the troll in the 8 lbs class. Just for the record I got these facts from Mr. John Foley of Beenbane, Waterville, who I might add, is a good Angler himself as well as a Honey producer and his reputation speaks for itself in the Honey Department. Wind W and moderate with reasonable cloud cover.
5/3/15 Lough Currane was on the slack side in all departments especially my Noble Angler, so the least said the soonest mended. Wind W moderate and overcast. Now to the reminiscing department, I had an email saying there were no engines in those days on Lough Currane, he was making comment on the old photo I put up of the Old Southern Hotel and a boat fishing out of the Bog. So here is a little bit of history in the outboard motor department, the first engine was put on the lake in 1964 by the Appleby Brothers Mr. E.G. and E.M.H. Appleby. Some people say 1965? Who am I to argue and I can tell there was hell to pay but that is another story!
6/3/15 Lough Currane was on the wild side but this didn’t deter Limerick Angler Mr. Joe Whelan from going down the Lake to manipulate their lures and catching a fine 9lbs Salmon on the troll, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Terence Wharton Junior. Wind as already stated and overcast.
7/3/15 Lough Currane was on the wild side again with a strong SW wind blowing across the lake. There was only one boat fishing on the South side and that was Mr. Terence Wharton Junior with his client and fair play to Terence he lets his fingers do the talking and here is his report the lake was mental and we caught nothing. Wind as already stated and overcast with misty rain.
8/3/15 Today’s results will satisfy all the Dominic McGillicuddy fan group of www.fishingwithdom.com yes you have it, on his first day out on Lough Currane he caught a fine 10 lbs Salmon on the troll and considering he is recovering from a hernia operation, its some going and fair play to him. Wind was light W with reasonable cloud cover.
9/3/15 Lough Currane was like the wild West with a strong WNW blowing across as my Noble Anglers looked on in vain and if any boats did ventured out they failed miserably in their duties in all departments. Wind as already stated with good cloud cover with the odd shower.
That is your ration from the opening days on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
