Last Wednesday, 27 May, Thomas Long took his son Joseph, age 14, fishing to the River Barrow at St Mullins, Co. Carlow. The father and son team met up with another two friends at around 1230 to fish the incoming tide.

After only ten minutes or so he landed a 2.7lb shad. In total Thomas and Joseph had 4 fish, but Joseph’s were better than his father’s 0.75lb shads. All the fish caught were returned to the river.
Thomas tells us that these were Joseph’s first shad and that he is hooked on fishing now.
