Another great days fishing was had on Killala Bay aboard “LEAH” skippered by Donal Kennedy. Donal tells us if you give him some decent weather and he will catch fish. A s a skipper is well aware that mother nature dictates.

Spotted Ray caught by an angler from Crossmolina and happy to put it back alive.

Anyway a great crew made up of people from Galway and Crossmolina left Killala Harbour early on Sunday 4th Oct to get the best of the weather which was to change in the afternoon. The anglers set out with winds light southerly , ideal for slow drifts in 30 meters of water well out the bay over sandy ground.  The skipper was hoping for a variety of flat fish and his party was not disappointed with the first drift producing some lovely Thornback Rays along with the ever present Lesser Spotted Dodfish.

The fresh mackerel bait was very scarce and they were not  around due to a great number of hungry seals staying close to the boat. The skipper as always had come well prepared with a full bucket of fresh mackerel caught the night before. After many more drifts a happy party decided in late afternoon to return home to Killala, having caught many Blonde Rays, Thornback Rays and Spotted Rays along with Dabs, Plaice, and Turbot. Just before returning to Harbour  the skipper stopped to let his party catch some fresh mackerel that showed up on his sounder. All in all a lovely day was had by everyone.
