Brian McCall reports some members of IrishKayakAngling.com are seeing an improvement in the cod fishing off the Down coast…

Andrew McIlhone, from Co. Down, made a dash for the salt this April in the hopes of some cod being about. Cod fishing had been a very lackluster affair as of late but this past week seems to have changed. Using mackerel baited, bleeding glow worms from Shamrock Tackle, he dropped down into the flooding water. Not long after the drop, Andrew was into his first cod of the day. Not huge, but a good sign. As the day progressed and the weather got better, the codling were really showing in numbers.

The cod fishing around Down has improved

The tide flooded to around 25metres the takes continued with the bigger fish beginning to appear with the fish pictured being some of the bigger ones caught. A good sign and hopefully more and bigger fish start to arrive. Pollack, coalfish, whiting and scorpion fish were also in abundance.
