Dermot Page reports on the final of the Rathcon Winter League fished yesterday…

The Rathcon Winter League final was held yesterday, Sunday 09 March. 13 anglers fished the event and landed 26 fish over the 4hrs. It was a tough but fair final with a strong westerly wind making conditions pretty testing.

The 1st half hour only produced 2 fish but as the day warmed up more fish came on the move. Carl Owens had 3 on buzzers and both Martin McGorian and Aidan Heffernan landed fish of around 8-10lbs.

Many thanks to all who competed and all who helped throughout the winter league and to Southside Angling for all their prize sponsorship.

Congratulations to the following prize winners

  • 1st Paul Kay – 5 fish
  • 2nd Noel Bennett – 4 fish
  • 3rd Dave McBride – 3 fish
  • 4th Carl Owens – 3 fish
  • 5th Garrett Byrne – 2 fish

Go fishing…

Rathcon Lake is 8.5 acres and is stocked with top quality rainbow trout. The lake is fly fishing only and designed to allow maximum fishing so that 90% of the water can be covered. The average depth is 10ft with deep holes of up to 20ft in places. The fishery is open all year round and is home to a wide range of fly life, in particular buzzers, sedges, hawthorn and daddylonglegs, all providing excellent dry fly fishing, especially in the summer evenings.
