Rob Love of Love Fishing Ireland  admits that DIY isn’t exactly his forte, however he tells us:

Spurred on by thoughts of tying flies in splendid isolation, cocooned from the distractions of modern life I brushed off cobwebs, cleared far too much dust from several tools and got to work.

The result of my endeavour is a man cave at the bottom of the garden. While not of palatial proportions it doesn’t exactly resemble the lodgings of Henri Charriere (Papillon) when imprisoned on a penal colony in French Guiana. There are even the luxuries of shelves for reels, rod racks and best of all a fly tying desk.

But I know that I am not unique in my love of getting away from it all. I have more than a inkling thats why Filip, Wim and Derek came over from Belgium for a weekends river fishing on the Liffey. Having guided for them before I was looking forward to this one as they are a guides dream – good natured and lots of fun.

Testing conditions on both days of strong winds, temperatures well below normal and blustery showers didn’t even dampen their marvellous enthusiasm. Despite really poor weather the beauty of this lovely river didn’t go unnoticed with the guys revelling in its wonderful peacefulness.

For the record Filip was top of the charts with about 10 modestly sized but beautifully marked trout and a small Jack Pike caught in deeper water from the Sheelin boat.

But back to getting away from it all, for that is exactly what I have the opportunity to do tonight.  With high pressure (at last) dominating our weather and with a pass from the rules committee – see previous posts on the benefits of brownie points I am looking forward to spending some time on my favourite stretch of the Liffey and who knows after discovering one or two new Sedge patterns I might even get a chance to sneak out to my newly constructed man cave and a tie a couple up before heading out – bliss.

Love Fishing Ireland have a small team of experienced guides available for tailor made fishing excursions for both wild brown trout and pike. While the standard days guiding on the River Liffey or Rye Water will appeal to many, for the more adventurous they offer guided trips by Canadian canoe along what are considered to be the best fishing beats of the River Liffey.
