Michael Flanagan reports that anglers are slow to get out on Owel since opening day, but a few hardy souls braved the choppy conditions last week and were rewarded with some nice fish…
I gave it a lash Saturday and boated my first Owel trout of the season on the troll. The fish was in mind condition, and hammered a small Rainbow trout colored lure, trolled high up in 10-12ft of water.

On the day I was testing the Shimano Caenan 100 baitcasting reel, and it’s some bit of kit and should be available in most good angling centers. Also on Owel were Rochfortbridge lads Peter Carroll, and Sean Flynn, and they also had a few trout on the troll that day. I had a great chat with the lads are there are certainly fired up for the coming season. Don’t forget Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association A.G.M. is on tonight Wednesday March 11th, with an 8pm start in Tullaghan Angling Center.
