Summer weather has still not arrived and cool winds with frequent showers prevailed for much of the week. Mayfly continue to hatch on both Lough Conn & Cullin and angling is a little patchy at times but has been excellent generally.
Liam McHugh and Mick Sweeney from Loughrea, Galway had great fishing on L. Cullin last week with 14 and 12 decent trout on two consecutive days. Best fish was 2lbs. Michael Tiernan and Ronan Baggott also had a great day on Cullin with 10 good trout boated and released as well as numerous smaller ones.
On Lough Conn, local anglers Brendan Breslin and Steven Browne had 8 and 7 good trout respectively, including one of 2.5lbs. Most of the fish were caught between the cormorant rocks and Brackwansha point on dry mayfly patterns. Also in the Brackwansha area Andrew Higgins and James Duggan from Sligo had 14 decent trout as well as about 20 smaller ones. Green peters and golden olive bumbles were the most successful flies.
Jeff Young and Steve Sullivan visiting from Boston had two excellent days fishing in the Cloghans area. 10 good trout were boated and released, as were numerous small fish. There were still some olives about and dry artificials accounted for the majority of their fish. Gerry McLoughlin and Justin Flemming from Tuam also had good fishing in the Cloghans area. 11 trout over 14” were reported, mostly on green peters and bibios.
Meanwhile, on the other side of L. Conn, Larry Reilly and Gerry Robinson had 9 trout between them, all to a Royal Wulff, and Barry Mark and Dennis Clarke had 12 trout on Dry Wulff patterns, all of these were caught in the Massbrook area.
At the Northern end of the lake, good hatches of Mayfly were reported and Gerry Hand from Longford had 2 trout over 2lbs in Tolans bay on a Green Wulff.
There is a large turnout expected this coming weekend on L. Conn with the Conn & Cullin Trout Angling Association annual whit weekend competition. A full report on this event will feature in next weeks report.
