Ronan Cusack reports that the cold Easterly winds have done nothing to slow down the good fishing on Mask this week. Good hatches of Olives mixed with the first sprinkle of Mayfly, are keeping the trout interested and looking towards the surface. Buzzer hatches were good during the early part of last week and many good trout have been reported.

2012 World Cup winner Mick Dunne shows us that he’s still got it when it comes to catching trout on Lough Mask, as he wins the Ballinrobe & District anglers 2 day development competition for the second year in a row. This competition is run over 2 days and the combined weight of both anglers in the boat determines the winner. Mick’s boat partner this year was well known Mask angler John Murry from Sligo. The lads weighed in 16 trout weighing 19.72lbs. A total of 64 anglers competed and 231 trout were weighed in totalling 260.91lbs. Second place went to Martin Connors Armagh and Dennis Cronin Cork, with 14 fish weighing 18.62lbs. Third position was Michael Twohig Cork and Jonathan Craven with 13 trout weighing 18.11lbs. Heaviest fish prize went to Jackie Coyne from Connemara with a trout of 2.82lbs.

Cian, Dara, Fergal and Brendan Murtagh from Co Cavan were joined by good friend Vincent Kelly for their annual 3 day trip to Mask this week. The Lads had 25 keepable trout for their trip, on a combination of wets and buzzer. The best fish went to Cian, which weighed in just over 4lbs.
David Hall of hall’s angling centre had a good day on Sunday last with fish up to 3.5lbs on wets in Caher bay. David also reported returning numerous undersize throughout the day.
The out look for the coming few days is for a good deal of rain, yet temperatures are to rise towards the end of the week.
