News of very good pollack fishing on the fly in Cork Harbour was a feature of reports from Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan throughout the summer. In fact the fun started as soon as April this year with the guide excited about the treasure trove of fish available in the harbour and on it’s outer limits.
“It never ceases to amaze me,” Richie says , “that we fly thousands of miles to catch a few bone fish on the fly when we have riches beyond most anglers dreams on our doorstep. A father and son on a recent outing referred to the pollack on the fly as a magical fishing experience ”
Richie tells us that in his experience the fly out fishes all other methods aboard his boat Sea Hawk, and yes fluorocarbon does give that extra edge on an outing. When fly and traditional methods are used together the fluff chucker wins hands down every time. Even the state of tide, other than slack water, doesn’t makes a huge difference to the return according to Richie.
“Anglers are fed up of me saying a pollock every cast,” Richie says, “but when the season is in full swing that’s how it is , frenetic!”
A great endorsement of the fly fishing possibilities for pollack in the Harbour was when an American angler went to her hotel manager in the Waters Edge Hotel in Cobh this summer to boast that there were only 4 casts when she didn’t catch a fish! Now that’s good angling in anyone’s language. Another angler with huge saltwater fly fishing experience turned to the guide recently and said “Richie, this is world class fishing”. In addition, a few cod can be expected every now and then to add to the fun. Ireland’s best kept angling secret.
