Lindsey Clarke reports from the RIVER DROWES – Monday 21st February to Sunday 27th March 2016.

Water levels were lovely over the week once again. On Monday the gauge read 0.52m and the river gently fell and the gauge on Friday read 0.49m. Rain over the Easter weekend however meant the river rose slightly again and by the end of play on Sunday the gauge read 0.56m. This was a good week on the Drowes with some 20 salmon caught. Below are recorded catches taken from the fishery Catch Register. On Monday, Mark Donaghey recorded a 9lb salmon caught and released again on a fly from the Mill Pool. On Tuesday, Tom Colgan reported a 10lb 3oz salmon caught on worm from the Mill Pool. On Wednesday, Eoin McManus recorded a 7lb salmon caught on a fly from the Mill Pool and Fergal Hanley accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a Mepps Spinner from The Grazing’s.

On Friday, Chris Gallagher reported a 6¼lb salmon caught on worm from the Perch Pool and Eoin McManus caught and released a 6lb salmon on fly from the Old Sea Pool. On Saturday, Mark Conlon recorded a 6lb salmon caught on worm from The Grazing’s and hooked and lost 2 further fresh salmon.

On Sunday, Johnny Ciconte recorded a 6lb salmon caught on prawn from the Long Hole. Davy Grey reported a 5½lb salmon caught on prawn from the Mill Pool. Sean Brophy registered a 5½lb salmon caught on worm from the Mill Pool and Kieran Conlon accounted for a 10lb salmon caught and released again on fly from the Broadwater. Prospects remain good for the coming week.

30/03/2016 There has been a pretty steady run of fish over the last week to 10 days. Water levels have risen a little to 0.563 on the gauge. The weather has been a mixture of sunshine and showers but it has remained quite cold in easterly winds. The forecast for the coming days is westerly winds bringing heavy rain of Friday and unsettled conditions over the weekend.
