Congratulations to the “King Of The Canal 2016” Paul Holding on a great win. It was good day out today at my “King Of The Canal” Open Match. A great mix of 54 anglers lined the banks and as always the banter at the draw was second to none. We fished the Grand Canal at Daingean and used the Town Section, Millenium Bridge and the Rowing Course. Red hot conditions and boat traffic made for difficult fishing conditions in the roasting hot sun.
The draw went off smoothly and everyone found their pegs easily with the help of the map I drew up for every angler. The canal was alive with fish but they were clearly not in feeding mode in the baking heat.
I started off well but after 1 hour the 2nd boat tore through my swim and killed it stone dead. I winkled out a few bites throughout the day and ended up hooking a big tench which snapped me on a light roach rig after snagging me in a floating branch. I think the whole bank heard me cursing! Ended up with 40 fish for 4lb 14oz… 2oz short of a section win!
I hope everyone had a good day today and thanks everyone for coming! It’s great to see big matches on the canals again. A big thanks to Castle Barna Golf Club for the lovely breakfast and the food at the presentation. Also all the lads who helped with the draw and the weigh in.
