This year’s NCFFI Junior All Ireland Championships took place at Killykeen Forest Park on Saturday 27th August followed by the Inter-Provincial Team Championships on Sunday.
The event provides the opportunity for young anglers to come together and compete in a National Championships of their own before progressing to senior level. A Novice category is included with coached assistance designed to introduce newcomers to competitive fishing. The challenging County Cavan venue chosen for its accessibility to all brought out the skills in the young anglers who fished a variety of methods. The top weight of the day went to Eoin Rogers of Carrickmacross AC with his 3.8kg. Nine U23’s, Eleven U18’s and 9 U14’s fished alongside eight novices for the champion for the championsip trophy by section with the top three in each awarded a selection of tackle prizes sponsored by Tubertini UK Ltd. After the all-essential net dip the Juniors were provided with a mixing bowl and feeder gift from Sensas Ireland along with complimentary caster and maggot from Irish Bait & Tackle Limited. After three hours of fishing (four for the U23’s) everyone was provided with a meal whilst the presentation took place at Minnies’ in Killeshandra. This event was followed on Sunday by the Junior Inter-Provincial Championships fishing the same venue. Three provinces fielded five teams of five with Ulster winning the day and retaining their title. The match saw team Ulster Team One members Stephan Patterson, Jordan Hall, Harry Whitehead, Conor Gaughan and Aaron Galbraith win two and come second in three sections achieving a fantastic score of 8 points.
With weights averaging just above the kilo the fishing was again tough and all should be commended on their fishing. Well done to the second placed teams especially Connaght who fielded the youngest team and to Eoin Rogers and Harry Whitehead of Ulster for scoring the top weights of 9kg and 6kg respectively.
1st Ulster Team One – 8 points
2nd Joint Leinster Team Blue and Connaught – 13 points
3rd Leinster Team Black – 19 points
4th Ulster Team Two – 21 points
Thanks to all who took part in both events along with our sponsors and coaches. In 2017 the event will take place on Saturday 26th of August followed by the Junior Inter Provincials on the Sunday.
Investing in Our Juniors
The NCFFI values to the importance of introducing children and young people to our sport and through a programme of coaching enables clubs country wide to invest in their juniors.
Carrickmacross Angling & Junior Development club run a junior angling hub under the ‘Angling for Youth Development Ireland’ banner. An initiative from the Angling Council of Ireland in association with Inland Fisheries the club has benefitted from a range of tackle to allow them to coach their juniors and run an annual summer camp. With two of their members champions of their category and others scoring well this investment In their juniors is paying off.
Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club, also an AFYDI hub have been running a summer school on the Royal Canal for a number of years and we see this in the number of anglers they are now producing at this level with two Leinster teams in the Inter Provincial Championships.
Lurgan Coarse Anglers have only recently introduced anglers to the club having benefitted from a set of ten whips from the NCFFI Junior Development fund this year to aid their coaching. Already the benefit from this is showing with novice anglers Caolan Donnelly 10yrs and Jack O’Brien 11yrs taking the winning and second placed positions in the Novice category at their very fist championships.
Lakelands Angling Ballinamore, another club which has only recently introduced a junior programme representatives did well with Charlie Richards placed 2nd in the Under 14 category. The club also provided two members for the Connaght Provncial Team on Sunday placed joint second. This was a fantastic achievement for the County Leitrim juniors Charlie Richards, Roisin Bohan, Kevin McGovern, Shay Lynch and Leon O’Brien.
