David McEvoy, fishery manager at Delphi lets us know of the second salmon of the season:
Well after the amazing start we had last year, fishing has been more difficult this year with very high water throughout. We’ve had a few people brushing off the cobwebs in the last week or so, with plenty of joy but no fish to show.
That changed today however, when Michael Griffin landed a fine sea liced fish of 11lbs 10ozs in the Waterfall pool this afternoon on a Delphi Collie. It was indeed well earned as today really epitomised what Spring salmon fishing is all about. The surrounding hills were covered in snow, the river was at 77 and there were dreadful showers of hail and sleet thrown in for good measure. I suppose you could say Spring salmon anglers are a bit like the fish, “a rare breed” and you would need to be truly committed or some people might say totally mad to fish in such weather. I suppose that’s what makes Spring fishing so special.
At this moment in time the river is probably rising, but we are hopefully in for a few dry days which will bring water levels down. This will hopefully make these elusive fish a little easier to come into contact with. On this note there is still availability over the next few days, so if you’re in the mood to wet a line just contact us.
