Ronan Cusack reports from Lough Mask:

Finally the water levels on Lough Mask have begun to subside after what seemed to be a never ending winter. The past week has brought a significant rise in air temperature and more spring like weather conditions, which has brought a few anglers to the lake. Good hatches of small buzzers have been reported in some of the sheltered bays with the odd trout seen rising.

Ballinrobe Anglers Chairman, Kevin Bettie, and fishing partner, Ray Broughton, have been doing well over the past few weeks on wet flies. Kevin reported having fish on most trips out, but nothing of any great size. Local angler, Sean McAvoy, has also been doing well on wets, with some nice fish from Cahir Bay. Liam Conroy, Tourmakeady, had a cracking day on Saturday last fishing with Michael O’Toole. The two anglers had 7 trout for the day on wets (best fish 2lbs). Denis Kelleher, Ballinrobe, ventured out for the first time this year on Sunday last and reported 3 trout. (best fish 1.5 lbs). Peter Byrne, Castlebar, and Johnny Maroney, Ennis, fished for a few hours on Sunday and they finished with 1trout for 1.5 lbs. Peter also doubled into what he thought was going to be a fish of a lifetime at the mouth of Golden Bay, but unfortunately what he thought was a 10lb brown had a longer nose and more of a green tinge. Still a nice fish on the fly!

Tim Hannon, Ballinrobe, heading out for the first time this year from a very flooded car park in Cushlough.
