Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports on the competition scene at Lough Owel…
Lough Owel Anglers were in action last Sunday and fished the Clonhugh Cup. This was the last club competition of the 2016 season, and twenty-five trout were presented at the 7pm weigh-in. In addition quite a few fish were caught and returned on the day. Local Postman Alan Tyrrell was top rod with a trout of 1.320kg, John Plunkett finished 2nd with 1.300kg,John Reid 3rd with 1.285kg, and 4th Brendan Murray with 1.240kg.
Brendan also picked up the Tommy McCormack Cup presented by Mick McCormack to the Top Lough Owel Angler during the 2016 season fly-fishing competitions. Lough Owel will produce a few good fish in the coming weeks, and the trout season will close on October 12th. Boat hire on Owel give Jack Doolin a bell on 044-93-42085.
Get in the net…
I mentioned some weeks back that I picked up a lovely Silstar landing net in David O, Malleys.I was seriously thinking about getting it blessed or sprinkle a drop of Holy Water on it, as I was struggling to get a fish into the boat every time I took it with me. Well as they say the duck was broken and I boated a few lovely Owel trout last week in very blustery conditions. If you remember back to last Friday the rain that fell was out of this world, and I am beging to wonder is their any wet gear that is actually waterproof. Still I battled on and the Silstar net is a lovely bit of kit, ideal for boat and bank fishing. The lever lock is very sturdy, and it will extent two almost 5ft, handy for my little arms some might say. The Bubber net meshing is very soft, and fish can be easily removed from the net. I am sure if you drop into David he will give you a bit more information on this lovely bit of angling gear. I still have the Leeda Digital scales to put two the test, maybe a trip to Ree is on the cards.
