Michael Flanagan from Midland Angling reports from Lough Owel:
I met some great character from time to time in the Angling World and our Midland anglers are up there with the best. Charlie Greville now a townie and ex army man, originally from Killucan has his bread buttered on both sides. Charlie loves his bit of fishing, and his wife Helen drops Charlie out regularly to fish Owel. Helen is from Ginnell Terrace so we know each other quite well, but would not stand in with Charlie for a pic of his prized catch at Tullaghan. In all fairness the slagging would be a much for Charlie back in Matt Cullen’s in the Bridge Bar.
Also on Owel we met Tom O’Toole of Clogherinkoe in Clonard, and the Tom boy had a cracking trout of 5lbs 6oz. Tom loves his bit of trolling, and chilling out on the lakes.
On Wednesday October 12th our brown trout season closed, and on the day Owel anglers hosted a sweepstake competition. A total of 12 fished were presented at the 6pm finish at Mullallys, with Dublin angler Sean Goulding taking top rod with a lovely fish of 3lbs 3oz.Martin McGorian was 2nd with 2lbs 11oz, and 3rd Brendan Murray 2lbs. It was a tough few last days on Owel with many anglers reporting that the trout were locked on Perch and Rudd fry.
Also the trolling anglers found it tough going with fish being caught on hard lures with perch and rainbow trout colors working best. Still its all to look forward two again come March 1st 2017.
Owel remains open for coarse fishing, and if we get a few soft days over the winter its worth a days trolling for pike and perch. Or a spot of jigging for perch, which is becoming quite popular among anglers.
