The Irish Kayak angling club recently held its first round of the IKAC All Ireland championship on the waters of Lough Derg from Portumna Co. Galway. Brian McCall reports…
The first round of our competition was kindly Sponsored by Gary Kenny, Palmerston stores.

There were 3 challenges set on the day. The main one was to catch, photo and release 1 pike, 1 perch, 2 coarse fish and the “joker” fish of the day was a trout. The joker is a fish that can double your total score after the pike perch and coarse fish have been caught. The other challenges were most pike and most trout.

There was a total of 25 anglers taking part and we got the competition underway at 11am and due to finish at 5pm.
A number of pike, 27, were caught during the competition the largest of which was estimated at 25lb and a PB for the angler, Tomas. There was also plenty of roach, rudd and hybrids caught along with a small number of perch. The main competition was won by Ian Burton who also won the prize for most pike, landing 6 on the day. No trout were caught on the day with little or no rise noted. All fish were released.
This competition is open to all and is free to enter. All safety gear must be used and promoting safety is the focal point of these meets. If you would like to attend these meets to see what way we are set up then you are very welcome. Visit www.irishkayakangling.com for all the info.
Special mention to Portumna & District angling association for their permission to allow us use their slipway for launch on the day.
